 What's in a name? The inspiration for the firm's name came
from my experience as an amateur woodworker. In woodworking the dovetail joint
is the hallmark of fine craftsmanship. It's a way of connecting pieces together
that is inherently strong by design. That
is the same kind of strong, close relationship I want to develop with
our clients - one that binds us together to achieve common goals. Pardon the pun, but I think the name is
a great fit. Incidentally, another way of connecting wood is called a butt
joint. For obvious reasons, that option got scratched off the list pretty
quickly. I launched Dovetail Partners in 2003. It
is an independent consulting practice that provides advisory services in general
management and human resources, primarily to independent businesses and
professional firms. Rather than maintain a large staff
complement, we draw upon a bank of specialists as and when needed. This approach
keeps our overheads low and lets us give excellent value for your
money. About Dovetail's Owner | A Certified Management Consultant,
Merv Manthey has over 25 years of diverse business experience, evenly
split between senior advisory roles and leadership positions in industry.
After holding sales, marketing and
general management positions in the scientific equipment field and then in
graphic arts, he started a Saskatoon-based executive search firm in 1986.
Four years later, Merv was recruited by KPMG Consulting and moved to
Calgary. While with KPMG he oversaw the executive search, compensation and
general consulting aspects of their local HR practice. He also worked on a
variety of operational reviews and value for money audits. In 1999 Merv
joined Collins Barrow Calgary, Chartered Accountants and Consultants, as
Director of HR and shortly afterward was appointed to the newly created
position of Chief Operating Officer. As the COO, he led operational and
strategic planning, HR, IT, internal accounting, administration and
marketing functions. More recently, Merv decided to
return to his consulting roots and established Dovetail
